As winter begins to fade into spring, fashion lovers are embracing the Spring-Summer fashion trends as seen on runways around the world.
From Paris and Milan to New York and London, trends for Spring-Summer 2022 show that designers are eager for people to get outside, to socialize, and to share their love of fashion. They do this through the use of unique colors and patterns, creative cuts, and innovative design elements that will inspire others to express themselves through their individual design choices.
Leather and Lace
Leather and lace were popular trends in the Spring-Summer shows in Paris. Leather was seen in accessories, garment accents, and high boots. In the Hermès Spring 2022 show, leather was a dominant fabric featured in pieces with linear and geometric elements. The leather’s structured, natural, and masculine qualities were offset by a prevalence of soft, delicate lace. The femininity of the fabric was often offset by structured pieces like tailored tweed blazers and fitted linen trousers. Gauchere’s Spring-Summer 2022 collection featured lace accents with flowing silhouettes and loosely fitted blouses and skirts.

Sensuality and Skin
The presence of skin and an emphasis on the torso and hips were significant fashion trends in Milan for Spring-Summer 2022. The collection from No. 21 featured low-slung wrapped maxi skirts in bold colors with cut-outs that accentuate the sensuality of female curves. Versace also embraced the ‘hip dip’ trend by cropping their bright blouses well above the navel and pairing them with midi skirts. Philosophy put their own spin on the hip and torso trend with structured leather tops and long straps that wrap around the waist.

Bohemian Chic
Elements of bohemian chic graced the runways of New York at several Spring-Summer 2022 fashion shows. The Ulla Johnson collection emphasized bright, psychedelic colors and fiber art pieces such as crocheted bikini tops and long knit sheath dresses. Artisan crocheted tops with ornate patterns and lace details appeared on the Altuzarra runway and was juxtaposed with flowing monochromatic silk skirts and tailored jackets. With designs reminiscent of fiber crafts you would see at your grandmother’s house, Monse featured crocheted miniskirts in classic Afghan patterns.

Urban Peasant
Billowing silhouettes, peasant dresses, and multi-tiered skirts in traditional calico patterns were trending on runways around the world for Spring-Summer 2022. The “urban peasant” aesthetic has been popular for a couple of years. This season’s version focuses on brighter colors and more delicate and dense patterns such as paisley, fillagree, and pinstripes. Sleeve length is trending to fall at the thumb, with large, puffed sleeves or rouching at the elbow. Look for peasant fashion trends in the Spring-Summer 2022 collections of Elie Saab, Giambattista Valli, and Kitx.

Ornate Beadwork
Decorative beadwork was a prominent feature of many Spring-Summer 2022 fashion shows. Displaying an element of luxury and a retro 1980s feel, current beadwork trends include metallic sequins, pearls, and Swarovski crystals. On the runways of Simone Rocha, Tom Ford, and Givenchy, designers embraced the “pearlcore” trends. From long, draping strands of pearls to beaded embellishments on bodices and skirts, the prevalence of pearls adds sophistication and elegance to any spring/summer ensembles.

Preppy, Collegiate Style
From knee-high stockings and embossed blazers to vintage-style sweater vests, preppy style is on-trend for Spring-Summer 2022. Chunky cropped college sweaters were seen on the runways of Lacoste, while rugby-style shirts with colorful stripes appeared in the Botter fashion show. Miu Miu also embraced the collegiate aesthetic, combining highly cropped knits with barely-there miniskirts in textured khakis and tweeds. Preppy fashion trends also made their way to Chanel’s Spring-Summer 2022 collection with “Clueless” inspired matching plaid blazers and skirts in bold pinks and yellows.
