Fashion sketches for beginners: how to improve your drawing

Learning to create a fashion sketch is one of the most important things you will need to do in your journey to becoming a fashion designer. The purpose of a fashion sketch is to show the technical details of your design, its colourways and how it should be styled. A sketch is the first step in bringing your design to life!

In the fashion industry, a sketch is referred to as croquis. A croquis (the French word for sketch) is a drawing of a figure striking a modelesque pose and you will use it to sketch and showcase your design. The body proportions of a croquis are usually elongated to exaggerate height and reflect a typical model’s body. In general, the body should be around 9 heads taller than the length of the head drawn.

Before you start, you should already have an idea of what you’re going to design based on your trend research. When you begin sketching your croquis you should:

  • Choose a soft lead pencil with around 4b – 6b hardness. These are not too thick, are less likely to leave indents on the paper and are easy to erase

  • Choose a model pose that will show off your designs in the best way. For example, if you want to show detail on a pair of trousers, the croquis should be standing with its legs wide apart

As a beginner, the easiest way to draw a croquis is to find an existing sketch or template and trace over it. If you want to draw one from scratch, it may take time to get it right so keep practising until you do. Here are a few things to remember when drawing a croquis:

  • Always start by drawing a balanced line on your paper – this will help you achieve the correct proportions and symmetry.

  • Separate the balance line into 9 equal sections to represent the length of the body.

  • The pelvic area should be drawn first, just below the middle of the balance line.

  • Draw the torso and shoulders, making sure you curve in at the waist.

  • The neck should be half the length of the head, and the size of the head should be in proportion with the rest of the body.

  • Elongate the legs to about 4 times the length of the head. The feet should be the same length as the head and triangular.

  • The arms of a typical croquis are generally longer than usual.

As a croquis serves to showcase your design, there is no need to draw facial features and hair. It is your design that should be the focus, with as much detail included as possible. You should:

  • Trend and design research;

  • Refer to your mood board for inspiration.

  • Include the finer detail in your drawing including darts, seams, and trims;

  • Add colourways;

  • Draw on accessories to show how your design should be styled and complete the look.
